Daniel Schwartz: The Nature of Ice
USM NY Showroom
May 4-26, 2017
USM Modular Furniture presents the exhibition by Swiss photographer Daniel Schwartz. The images feature glaciers in Switzerland, Pakistan, Peru and Uganda and the conditions in which they exist. The collection can be viewed from May 4-26, 2017 in the USM New York Soho Showroom. The collection was previously exhibited in the USM international Showrooms in Berlin, Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Paris.
Glaciers form a dynamic system. Due to man-made climate change, they are rapidly losing surface area and mass with far-reaching consequences, because glaciers serve as reservoirs of the limited resource “water” as well as serving as an archive of climate history. Daniel Schwartz presents the glacier as a place of remembrance – confronted by loss and thus exposing the past – and at the same time, as a stage that reveals the future as it recedes. “de glacierum natura” is part of the “ICE AGE OUR AGE” project, launched in 2009, which combines pictorial art with natural sciences.
The project, designed exclusively for the USM exhibition series, combines photographs taken by Daniel Schwarz in Switzerland in 2014 with new works created in Pakistan, Uganda and Peru in the fall and winter of 2015 and 2016. In 2017, the “ICE AGE OUR AGE” project will be displayed in the Bündner Art Museum in Chur, Switzerland. An exhibit catalog as well as a monograph will be released at the same time. The project is presented in cooperation with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich (ETHZ) and the University of Bern.
Daniel Schwartz is a Swiss photographer and author. He was the first foreigner to document all known sections of the Great Wall of China (“The Great Wall of China,” 1990; revised and expanded edition released in 2001). Between 1990 and 2005, Schwartz worked for the cultural magazine du and as a freelance photojournalist in numerous crisis zones. Schwartz has received multiple awards for his photography and has had numerous individual exhibitions (including at the Kunsthaus Zürich and Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin) as well as group exhibitions (including at the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie in Arles, Fotomuseum Winterthur and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art).
