A green island in the office

Grofield designs and creates websites. Its head office is located in a suburb of Toyama.

When the company decided to move to a new office, it initially considered setting up shop downtown. However, a need for parking spaces (the car is the primary mode of transportation in this region) and the desire for a single-floor building led Grofield to expand the search to the suburbs. It found an ideal piece of land at the outskirts of a residential area. The idyllic tracks of a small regional train run in front of the property; on the other side, there is a street framed by lush, green trees. Smitten with the location, the company’s management decided to construct Grofield’s company building here.

In order to optimally link communication and a focused method of working, the company decided to construct a single-floor building with an L-shaped floor plan. The offices are situated on the longer side, and the conference rooms on the shorter side. A courtyard was built between the two building tracts. Each workstation is in front of a window to give all employees an unobstructed view over the lawn of the interior courtyard to the tree-framed street.

The rooms of the rectilinear building are furnished in a minimalist style. The main element consists of USM shelves in the corporate green.

The rooms of the rectilinear building are furnished in a minimalist style. The main element consists of USM shelves in the corporate green. The decision to only consider furniture by USM Haller was made from the start, and the rest of the design was determined with this in mind.

Since the company does not use paper and there aren’t many other materials to store, Grofield purchased only as many shelves as were absolutely necessary. They are arranged in a row running through the middle of the hallway with two stacked modules to create a green island that also serves as a communication hub for informal meetings. A plus of USM Haller is the modular design of the system, which allows the company to add shelves in the future when the number of employees grows.

The offices are situated on the longer side, and the conference rooms on the shorter side.

USM Haller products are also used as desks: Grofield chose tabletops in oak and walnut to complement the wood flooring.

An important requirement for furnishing an office building is to arrange the interior in a logical fashion. Not only does USM furniture help organize the space, it contributes to the timeless and open design of the room. Inspired by northern European minimalism, the design creates a classic modern ambiance that feels clean and peaceful.
